Beauty: The Mascara Experiment

So, once in a while, I write about make-up. Here, you can read what my daily make-up routine once was. And here, you can see what was the catalyst that pushed me towards paying more attention to, and taking better care of my skin. I realized the less blemishes to hide, the easier and less time consuming get ready would be – sort of like using photoshop to edit pictures.

All of that being said, my go to cosmetic item is mascara. I am a sucker for long, thick eyelashes. I have the length, however, I do not have the volume. So I have been on a multi year scavenger hunt for the mascara that does this for me. Note: all of my mascaras are always in the blackest of black in the waterproof formula that I can find in the specific line.

Lash Blast Volume by Covergirl in the fat orange tube set the bar for me when I was a teenager. I actually got it from my aunt who is a major coupon-er. The drug store brand was my go to for so many years after. Nothing I tried ever compared. I still even have an unopened back up tube to this day. And I got asked many times if I had on falsies with this tube. If you’re on a budget, this is definitely where the bang for your buck is when it comes to drugstore brands.

Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Lengthening and Volumizing Mascara didn’t stand true to the name for me. It surely does lengthen. However, the short fall was in the volumizing. My thin but long eyelashes just looked longer. Where was the volume? As I briefed you before, I already have pretty long eyelashes so I want my products to make them thicker.

Better than Sex by Too Faced – has a really interesting name and it is where the money is at! Ever since I swiped this formula on my eyelashes I have not been able to go back to using anything else. It gives my long eyelashes just the amount of volume I want. If I had a complaint it would be that it clumps with more than one coat but I guess with the amount of volume one swipe brings I don’t necessarily need two coats.  This is definitely worth the difference in bucks from the drugstore brand I love.

I have not touched on all of the mascaras that I tried – I am a Sephora Play Box subscriber and in my hunt I also went into Sephora one day and picked up all of the trial sizes to test them out. So there have been quite a few that just really weren’t worth it for me. The list includes Clinique’s High Impact Mascara, Benefit Cosmetics’ BAD gal lash, Hypnose Drama volume mascara, Buxom’s Lash Mascara, Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes, Urban Decay’s Perversion, and Benefit’s Roller Lash Curling and Lifting Mascara.

So tell me, what is your go to mascara and why?
