Beauty: Eyeliner, a comparison

So for the life of me I just cannot use a pencil or pen eyeliner to line my top eyelid. It doesn’t matter if it’s a felt tip, a this, that, or the other, it just doesn’t work. As a matter of fact, I can only use a pencil eyeliner on my lower waterline and it has to be a soft tip. As you can see, make-up is definitely not one of my strong points.

If you’ve noticed, sometimes I do rock a pretty killer cat eye (with the flick on the side) – and so I have been complimented (this is to let you know that this isn’t just my opinion)  and I do this using a gel liner in the pot with a brush.

So, much like I tried a couple of different mascaras which you can read about here, I went in search of the best gel pot eyeliner.

The Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner is where it all began. It is a drug store brand, one of many that I have tried (but this was 7+ years ago which is why the others are not included in this review) and it was definitely the best of them all. It comes with a brush that is super easy to use and has been one of my favorite eyeliner brushes from day one – but this may be because it is the brush I learned to do eyeliner with so all others are just weird to me. I use this eyeliner in blackest black and the reason I continued to use it was because the amount of color you get in one swipe beat out all of the others. I would have to go over the line a few times with other brands and would eventually end up with eyeliner that was too thick for my liking. I also have to add that I like the brush so much that I own multiple and have continued to use them with other gel pot liner brands.

Second up, was the Stila Smudge Pot. The texture of this eyeliner is very smooth, it glides onto your lid like no other. However, the color pay off was not as good as the drug store brand I was using initially. It was a bit of a disappointment because I paid more and expected a better product.

Then came the Tarte Clay Pot Waterproof Liner and now that I see the name has waterproof in it I can finally understand why it is so difficult to get off. This eyeliner has the color pay off I expect and definitely stays put until the next day even when I try to take it off at night. I definitely do like it but I may also be biased because the Tarte brand calls out to me.

In conclusion, I think the Stila Smudge Pot is a waste of my time and money. This leaves the Tarte and Maybelline options and I would have to say that the Maybelline product makes more sense because it is less expensive, offers the same amount of color pay off, and comes with it’s own brush.

Let’s hear from you. What’s your favorite type of eyeliner?
